Merger News: Culture Is Key Piece to Integration

The driving force behind all successful integrations is alignment of corporate culture.

“Our culture is defined by our values and our management style, and it’s displayed in our work environment,” says Sara Wade, senior vice president & chief human resources officer. “Culture is how we work, and we’re pleased to see that our cultures have a lot in common.”

Because Medco and Express Scripts are both pharmacy benefit managers, it’s only logical that our two companies would share a lot of goals. For example, Medco is committed to “more ways to keep you safe and help you save,” which parallels our mission of making the use of prescription drugs safer and more affordable.

“We are both successful organizations that have a clear mission and alignment with those goals,” Sara says. “In order to ensure a successful integration, we must understand the key differences in our cultures. To a certain degree our missions are similar. How we execute them may be different, but the core of what we do is provide outstanding service to our clients. We both strive to provide better patient outcomes at a lower cost. That core message is front and center here and at Medco, and it’s what drives us and them in our business every day.”

For us, The Express Way values clearly outline the “how” and “why” behind everything we do, and while Medco may not have the exact same values in place, there are some common themes.

“We’ve both been successful, and we both have guiding principles that drive what we do,” says Karen Matteuzzi, vice president, Human Resources. “We might say ‘Mutual Respect’ whereas they use a different term, but the sentiment is the same.”

Melanie Curtis, vice president, Talent Management & Organization Development, says both Express Scripts and Medco are performance-based companies with dedicated workforces.

“A large part of our corporate culture is defined by our stated values and how we live up to those values,” Melanie says. “Both Express Scripts and Medco embody a commitment to service. I think at the end of the day we have the same mission of providing outstanding service to our clients and their members.”

Sara says that common goals will be key to making the pending integration between us and Medco a smooth process.

“Like us, they have an engaged and energized leadership team, which will be the catalyst to make this integration successful,” Sara says. “How we treat customers and each other will help shape that. Ensuring that all employees are ready, willing and able to promote a positive corporate culture is imperative to effectively fulfilling our goals going forward.”
