First-in-country installation to expand access to next-generation, non-invasive brain radiosurgery in New South Wales

ZAP Surgical Systems, Inc., a global leader in non-invasive robotic brain surgery, today announced that GenesisCare will soon become the first cancer care provider in Australia to offer ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform. The installation within GenesisCare’s centre at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, New South Wales, is expected to begin this month, with first patient treatments anticipated before year-end.

The addition of ZAP-X will significantly expand GenesisCare’s neuro-oncology capabilities in Sydney, enabling the delivery of dedicated stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). Historically, SRS patients have primarily been treated using cobalt-60–based systems as well as multi-purpose radiotherapy linear accelerators. With ZAP-X, clinicians will now have access to a next-generation platform designed specifically for non-invasive cranial radiosurgery.

“SRS has transformed how we treat a wide range of brain conditions, and we are committed to continually advancing the technologies we offer our patients,” said Dr. Sandy Sampaio, Radiation Oncologist at GenesisCare. “By introducing ZAP-X, we are bringing advanced radiosurgery technology to Australia – enabling us to offer highly precise, non-invasive treatments that aim to protect a patient’s critical brain structures and improve their quality of life. We are proud to be first to offer this capability in Australia.”

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a non-invasive and painless procedure that has emerged as a gamechanger in the treatment of many primary and metastatic brain tumours, as well as select disorders of the brain, head, and neck. Often serving as an alternative to open surgery, SRS is typically completed in a single outpatient visit, allowing many patients to resume normal activities the same day.

“Sydney represents an important milestone for ZAP as we expand access to advanced cranial radiosurgery across the Asia-Pacific region,” said Yair Bauer, Vice President of ZAP Surgical APAC & President of ZAP Surgical Japan. “GenesisCare’s continued investment in this cutting-edge technology underscores our shared commitment to improving patient outcomes and making world-class, non-invasive brain treatment more accessible in Australia.”

Renowned for its groundbreaking design, the ZAP-X system leverages unique gyroscopic mobility to deliver radiosurgical beams from thousands of potential angles, precisely focusing radiation on the intended target. This pioneering approach is designed to enhance clinical outcomes by minimising unnecessary radiation exposure to healthy brain tissue and critical structures such as the brainstem, eyes, and optic nerves — helping preserve patient cognitive function and quality of life.

ZAP-X also stands apart as the first and only vault-free SRS technology. By eliminating the need for costly radiation bunkers, ZAP-X can be installed in more accessible, patient-friendly environments, while no longer being hidden behind concrete walls. Additionally, by utilising a modern linear accelerator, ZAP-X is the first dedicated cranial radiosurgery system to eliminate reliance on cobalt-60 radioactive sources, removing the logistical burdens associated with isotope management.

This upcoming installation at St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney underscores GenesisCare’s ongoing commitment to investing in advanced technologies that improve patient outcomes. Supported by Alorium, a specialised distributor for sourcing advanced healthcare technologies, the introduction of ZAP-X marks an important step in expanding access to world-class cranial radiosurgery for patients in New South Wales and beyond.

About ZAP Surgical Systems, Inc.

ZAP Surgical Systems, Inc., a global leader in non-invasive robotic brain surgery, is committed to reducing the costs and complexities that limit access to world-class radiosurgery (SRS) for the brain, head, and neck. The company manufactures the ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform and is also pioneering new potential applications of high-precision SRS in areas such as depression, addiction, and obesity. Founded in 2014 by Dr. John R. Adler, Emeritus Dorothy & TK Chan Professor of Neurosurgery and Radiation Oncology at Stanford University, ZAP introduced the world’s first vault-free radiosurgery platform – eliminating the need for costly shielded treatment rooms and enabling flexible, high-visibility siting. ZAP-X also advances beyond legacy Cobalt-60 technology with a modern linear accelerator for safer, more sustainable care. Learn more at ZAP Surgical and follow us on LinkedIn.
