Lexington, KentuckyKentucky personal injury attorney Chandler Maze is combining his passion for wildlife conservation with a public safety message aimed at reducing distracted driving across Kentucky.

As the founding attorney of Maze Law Offices, Chandler Maze has spent years helping individuals and families recover after serious car accidents. While his legal work focuses on protecting injury victims, his personal passion for wildlife conservation has inspired a unique initiative that connects road safety with the protection of Kentucky’s native turtles.

A Personal Mission Rooted in Road Safety and Conservation

As part of this effort, Maze continues to support a variety of community organizations, including the Kentuckiana Scaletuary, a nonprofit dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for turtles and other reptiles throughout the state. This partnership reflects both a commitment to conservation and a broader message about the dangers of distracted driving.

By combining charitable giving with public awareness, Maze hopes to encourage drivers to think differently about the choices they make behind the wheel. A moment of attention can make the difference between a safe trip and a preventable tragedy.

How Turtles Highlight the Risks of Distracted Driving

Every year, countless turtles are injured or killed while attempting to cross roadways. Slow-moving by nature, turtles are particularly vulnerable to traffic. Their presence on roads often goes unnoticed by drivers who are distracted by cell phones, navigation systems, or other activities that take attention away from driving.

For Maze, that reality highlights an important lesson that extends far beyond wildlife conservation.

“Vehicular mortality is the leading cause of death for so many turtles trying to cross roadways for mating or to lay eggs, as well as to just bask in the sun on a warm road. And if someone can’t see a turtle, it’s usually because they’re not paying attention, or they’re on their phone, or distracted in some way. If you’re not paying enough attention to avoid hitting something as slow moving as a turtle, you’re equally likely distracted enough to hit another car, another person, pets, or even a child playing in the street. It’s really a testament to distracted driving in general. If you can avoid the turtle, you can probably avoid hitting pedestrians too,” said Maze.  “It’s Kentucky. People enjoy the outdoors here.  We love taking walks, and kids love playing in the yards, which are naturally a lot of times near roads.  Parents should not have to worry as much as they do today about distracted and speeding drivers while simply trying to enjoy a day outside with their kids.”

The quote reflects a simple but powerful idea. Drivers who are alert enough to spot a turtle in the roadway are often better positioned to react to other hazards, whether that means a pedestrian stepping into a crosswalk, a cyclist riding along the shoulder, or a vehicle stopping unexpectedly ahead.

A Lesson That Extends Beyond Wildlife

The message resonates with the work Maze Law Offices handles every day. Distracted driving continues to be one of the leading causes of preventable traffic accidents across the country. A quick glance at a text message or notification can take a driver’s eyes off the road long enough to cause a serious collision.

While discussions about distracted driving often focus on statistics, Maze believes everyday examples can make the issue more relatable. Turtles provide a visible reminder that awareness matters and that safe driving starts with paying attention to what is happening around you.

“When drivers are paying attention, they notice more than just other vehicles,” Maze explained. “They see pedestrians, cyclists, children near roadways, pets, animals crossing the street, and changing traffic conditions. Awareness is one of the most important tools for preventing accidents.”

By encouraging motorists to stay focused, Maze hopes to help reduce crashes that can leave victims with significant physical, emotional, and financial burdens.

Supporting Conservation Through Community Giving

The Kentuckiana Scaletuary has become a valuable resource for reptile rescue, rehabilitation, and public education throughout the state. Maze’s contributions will help support various wildlife organizations’ ongoing efforts to care for injured turtles and other animals and promote conservation awareness.

According to Maze, the initiative reflects a broader commitment to giving back to the community while supporting causes that align with his personal values.

A Public Safety Message for Kentucky Drivers

While the charitable component focuses on conservation, the initiative also aims to spark conversations about distracted and careless driving and its consequences.

As a personal injury attorney, Maze regularly sees the impact negligent drivers can have on individuals and families. Even a brief distraction can prevent drivers from recognizing hazards in time to react safely, leading to crashes that could otherwise be avoided.

Maze hopes the campaign will encourage motorists to view road safety through a different lens. A turtle crossing the road may seem insignificant, but noticing it often reflects the kind of attentiveness that helps prevent collisions involving pedestrians, cyclists, children, and other drivers.

By keeping their eyes on the road and minimizing distractions, motorists can help create safer conditions for everyone who shares Kentucky’s country roads, streets, and highways. The message behind the initiative is simple: paying attention matters. Whether it is protecting wildlife, avoiding a crash, or helping keep communities safe, a moment of awareness can make a meaningful difference.
