The Sanity Project has published a new economic analysis estimating that delays in opening the Gordie Howe International Bridge may have cost Canada approximately $135-$155 million, while businesses missed potential toll, congestion, and time savings.

-- The Sanity Project has published a new independent analysis examining the estimated economic impact associated with the delayed opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, using publicly available government information and third-party economic research to evaluate the costs of bringing major transportation infrastructure into service later than anticipated.

The full analysis is available at https://www.thesanity.org/p/the-gordie-howe-bridge-cost?r=8ic6c2

Drawing on estimates published by Anderson Economic Group (AEG), the analysis estimates that approximately US$130 million to US$155 million in direct costs accumulated during roughly five months of delay between the project's previously anticipated early-2026 opening and the bridge entering service on July 27, 2026. The estimate is derived from AEG's publicly reported estimate of approximately US$6-7 million per week in direct costs, applied across the roughly 22-week delay.

According to the analysis, the estimated direct costs reflect expenses identified in AEG's assessment, including costs associated with the bridge authority, operations, customs facilities, and other public-sector expenditures connected to keeping completed infrastructure out of service. Existing Canada-U.S. border crossings continued handling passenger and commercial traffic throughout the period, while the operational benefits of the new crossing remained unavailable.

The report also examines the broader opportunity costs associated with delayed infrastructure commissioning. The Gordie Howe International Bridge was designed to provide six traffic lanes, modern inspection facilities, and a direct highway-to-highway connection between Highway 401 in Ontario and Interstate 75 in Michigan, increasing capacity across one of North America's busiest trade corridors. While trade continued to move through existing crossings, the analysis concludes that the expected efficiency gains—including reduced congestion, shorter travel times, and increased crossing capacity—were deferred until the bridge opened.

The bridge officially opened to traffic on July 27, 2026, following additional delays after construction was substantially complete. The opening followed additional commissioning and testing work, as well as a public dispute over the timing of the bridge's opening amid broader Canada-U.S. trade tensions. The Government of Canada has identified the Gordie Howe International Bridge as a C$6.4 billion infrastructure investment, with project costs intended to be recovered over time through toll revenue.

"Infrastructure projects are often evaluated based on their construction costs, but the timing of when they begin operating also has measurable economic implications," said Bo Kauffmann, founder and editor of The Sanity Project. "Our goal was to synthesize publicly available data into a transparent analysis that helps readers understand the financial effects associated with delayed infrastructure commissioning, while providing the complete methodology behind our calculations."

The analysis synthesizes publicly available information from the Government of Canada, the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, Anderson Economic Group, and other published sources. The complete methodology, calculations, and source documentation are included alongside the analysis.

The report is part of The Sanity Project's ongoing coverage of economics, public policy, infrastructure, and evidence-based journalism.
