Heritage Irrigation, a full service lawn irrigation company serving Virginia for over 20 years, has released a new case study on how routine maintenance uncovered a hidden irrigation leak that had been going on for years at a Richmond area home.

The case study follows homeowner Truly Hammock who turned to Heritage Irrigation after watching the technicians work on a neighbor’s yard. According to Hammock, the level of detail she saw convinced her to switch after working with several other irrigation companies over the years.

Sprinkler being repaired in Richmond, VA

During the initial service visit Heritage Irrigation technician Alvin Malone inspected the property zone by zone instead of just doing a quick visual assessment. While inspecting the system Malone noticed an area of the grass was unusually damp near the sidewalk and saw a sprinkler head bubbling excessively.

After getting approval from the homeowner Malone started investigating further. Things got complicated when underground wiring for landscape lighting and a lamppost was found near the affected area. Instead of using heavy equipment that could damage existing infrastructure Malone excavated the area by hand.

The source of the problem was found to be a damaged section of PVC pipe that had been leaking for a long time. According to the company the leak had gone undetected by previous service providers and water was escaping underground while water consumption was increasing.

Once the damaged pipe was repaired Malone carefully restored the affected area of the lawn. Sod was removed in sections before excavation and then reinstalled after the repair was completed to keep the appearance of the landscape intact.

“The time and attention to detail was amazing,” said Hammock in her review of the experience with Heritage Irrigation. She said after the work was done she couldn’t even tell where the repair was done.

The company says the case study shows the importance of thorough inspections and regular maintenance especially during the warmer months when irrigation systems are used the most. Even small leaks can add up to increased water consumption, higher utility bills, oversaturated soil and long term damage to lawns and landscaping.

According to Heritage Irrigation the circumstances of the repair show how easily problems can be overlooked when systems are not inspected carefully. Small leaks beneath the surface may not create standing water or other obvious signs but can affect lawn health, soil conditions and overall system efficiency. Catching these issues early can help homeowners avoid more extensive repairs down the road. The case study also shows the importance of combining skilled technicians with modern irrigation technology. Heritage Irrigation works with products from manufacturers like Hunter, Rain Bird, K-Rain and Netafim to create custom solutions for each property. Smart controllers, weather based adjustments, seasonal inspections and maintenance programs can all help with water savings throughout the year.

Heritage Irrigation says the lessons learned from the case study apply to both residential and commercial properties. Business owners, homeowner associations and individual homeowners face similar challenges with water usage, drainage, changing weather and aging infrastructure. Regular inspections can help identify issues before they become costly damage or unnecessary water consumption.

The case study is part of Heritage Irrigation’s broader approach to irrigation management in Richmond, Fredericksburg, Williamsburg, Spotsylvania and surrounding areas. Heritage Irrigation installs, maintains and repairs irrigation systems and provides drainage solutions, outdoor lighting and backyard putting greens.

“Stories like this show why comprehensive inspections are a part of responsible irrigation management,” said a Heritage Irrigation representative. “Sometimes the biggest savings come from finding the problems that aren’t visible to the naked eye.”
