Across more than two decades, Trisno Ishak has built a career spanning music, fashion and financial services, with trust and relationships as a consistent thread.

At first glance, music, fashion and financial services may appear to have very little in common. For Trisno Ishak, however, the thread connecting each chapter of his working life has always been remarkably consistent: people.

Over more than two decades, Ishak's career has moved through the recording industry, artist development, live entertainment, entrepreneurship, fashion and, more recently, financial services. The industries changed, but one principle stayed with him throughout -- relationships matter.

"Relationships have been the bedrock of my life story," Ishak says.

It is a simple statement, but one that makes sense when viewed against the path his career has taken.

Learning the Value of People Through Music

Ishak began his professional journey in the music industry as a recording artist, eventually becoming part of Urban Xchange during the group's years with Universal Music Singapore and Malaysia.

Like many young artists, he initially entered the industry because of a love for music and performance. But the years that followed taught him something beyond the creative side of the business.

A career in music was also built on trust.

Behind every recording, performance and opportunity were relationships with fellow musicians, producers, label executives, promoters, venue operators, media professionals and audiences.

Talent mattered, but so did reliability, reputation and the ability to work with different personalities.

His experience later expanded into A&R roles with Chynahouse and IO Music, placing him on another side of the music industry -- listening to artists, recognising their strengths and navigating the commercial realities surrounding creative talent.

It was an early lesson in something he would encounter repeatedly throughout his career: people rarely respond well to being treated merely as transactions.

They want to be heard.

From Performing to Building a Business

After his years in the recording industry, Ishak continued working independently in live entertainment, performing while also managing musicians and live music engagements.

The work brought another kind of education.

In live entertainment, one successful evening might lead to another booking months later. A recommendation could introduce a new client. A professional relationship with a venue could continue for years.

Reputation travelled.

And unlike a formal qualification or job title, reputation could not simply be placed on a résumé. It had to be earned repeatedly.

That understanding followed Ishak when he moved into entrepreneurship.

In 2011, Ishak co-founded Grey by Ortenhill, a Singapore footwear and lifestyle business that would later develop a presence beyond its home market.

Fashion was a very different industry from music.

There were products to develop, manufacturers to work with, suppliers to manage, customers to understand and commercial decisions to make. Retail itself would also change dramatically over the years, with businesses adapting to e-commerce, social media, pop-ups and evolving consumer habits.

But Ishak found himself relying on many of the same instincts he had developed earlier in life.

Listen to people.

Understand what they value.

Deliver what was promised.

Maintain the relationship after the transaction is completed.

Customers returned. Suppliers became long-term partners. Business relationships developed into friendships, while some friendships eventually created new business opportunities.

For Ishak, entrepreneurship reinforced a belief that a sale and a relationship are not the same thing.

A sale may take minutes.

A relationship can take years to build.

A Different Industry, the Same Foundation

In 2020, Ishak entered financial services, opening another chapter in an already unconventional professional journey.

The technical demands were new, but the human element was familiar.

Financial conversations often involve subjects that are deeply personal -- family responsibilities, financial security, future aspirations and long-term plans. Technical knowledge is important, but understanding the person behind those decisions can be equally important.

Clients have to feel comfortable speaking openly before meaningful conversations can take place. Trust cannot simply be assumed because someone carries a professional title.

It develops over time.

That perspective has shaped Ishak's approach to his work as a financial services professional. While technical knowledge remains essential, he believes people also remember whether someone listened to them, understood their circumstances and remained present after the initial conversation.

The transition into financial services therefore did not feel entirely disconnected from his earlier career.

The context had changed.

The importance of trust had not.

The Value of a Career That Does Not Follow a Straight Line

Ishak's professional journey has not followed the traditional model of spending an entire working life within a single industry.

For some, that might appear unconventional.

For Ishak, each chapter contributed something to the next.

Music taught him communication and connection.

A&R taught him how to listen to people and recognise potential.

Live entertainment taught him the importance of reputation and repeat relationships.

Entrepreneurship taught him resilience, negotiation and the realities of serving customers.

Financial services brought many of those lessons together in an environment where trust plays an especially important role.

It has also changed how he understands the familiar phrase, "Your network is your net worth."

To Ishak, networking is not about collecting names or adding as many people as possible to a contact list.

It is about relationships that remain meaningful over time.

Some of the most valuable connections in his life have lasted through changes in jobs, industries and circumstances. Others emerged unexpectedly from earlier chapters and resurfaced years later in completely different contexts.

That, he believes, is the real value of a network.

Not simply who you know, but how you have treated the people you have encountered along the way.

More than two decades after entering the music industry, Ishak continues to move between entrepreneurship, creative work and financial services.

The landscape around him has changed considerably.

Technology has altered how music is distributed, how fashion is sold and how financial services are delivered. Entire industries have become faster, more digital and increasingly automated.

Yet one part of business remains distinctly human.

Trust still takes time.

Relationships still need to be maintained.

And for Ishak, those relationships remain the common thread running through every chapter of his career.
