Author Dennis Shulman Releases The Sacrifice of Isaac: A Novel, Exploring Faith, Morality, Pain, and Redemption

Author Dennis Shulman presents an emotional literary novel about faith, guilt, identity, and the difficult choices that shape a person’s life, keeping readers engrossed until the very last page.

About the Book:

The novel follows Rabbi Solomon Jacobs, an aging scholar and former congregational rabbi who is quietly facing the end of his life while teaching Old Testament classes at a small community college in rural Missouri. Haunted by memories from what he calls his “other life,” Jacobs reflects on decades spent serving prestigious synagogues while struggling with emotional isolation, spiritual conflict, buried guilt, and the lasting consequences of past decisions.

As the story unfolds, readers are introduced to unforgettable characters, including Cantor Isaac Melnick, a fragile, emotionally exhausted religious leader who is attempting to survive the pressures, humiliations, and politics of synagogue life within an influential New Jersey congregation. Moving between past and present, the novel gradually reveals hidden truths, personal betrayals, moral struggles, and the emotional cost of silence and survival.

Drawing inspiration from the biblical story of Abraham and Isaac, The Sacrifice of Isaac: A Novel examines sacrifice in many forms, spiritual sacrifice, emotional sacrifice, love, reputation, identity, and truth itself. Through layered storytelling, theological reflection, and profound psychological insight, Dennis Shulman creates a novel that is both intellectually engaging and emotionally intimate.

About the Author:

Dennis Shulman received his B.A. from Brandeis University and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Harvard University. He was ordained as a Rabbi in 2003. His previous work, The Genius of Genesis, explored the first book of the Bible through a psychological lens. Blending his backgrounds in psychology, theology, and storytelling, Shulman brings a rare emotional and intellectual depth to his fiction. The Sacrifice of Isaac: A Novel continues his exploration of the human condition through faith, memory, morality, and spiritual struggle.
