He Flew, Sailed the World and Saw the Lord’s Guidance Along the Way
In A Christian Life Well Lived, West Point graduate and former Air Force instructor pilot Dean Bates looks back on a remarkable life shaped by adventure, service to others and an enduring trust in the Lord.

MARIETTA, GA September 11, 2026 - Dean Bates has spent a lifetime going places. Some journeys put him in the cockpit. Others carried him across oceans, through distant countries and into moments that tested his resolve. In A Christian Life Well Lived: Air Force Pilot, Extended Sailing, Enthusiastic Living, Bates gathers those experiences not as a traditional autobiography, but as reflections on a life in which he recognizes the Lord’s help and guidance.

There is plenty of adventure to tell.

A West Point graduate, Bates became an Air Force instructor pilot and lived in Germany for three years. His travels took him across Europe, Africa, India, Australia, Japan and elsewhere. Sailing became another major part of his life, including five trips to the Bahamas and two summers sailing with his wife from Florida to Upper Michigan while they were in their mid-seventies.

Yet the heart of the book lies beyond the miles traveled.

Bates recalls experiencing Bell’s Palsy in Ethiopia, where an Ethiopian doctor provided treatment after his U.S. doctor had none. He also writes about an 11-month period of unemployment after 55 years of faithful church attendance. When he went to his knees in prayer, a job offer arrived within five hours from a company he had not been in contact with for more than a year.

Through these stories, Bates hopes readers will find hope and joy in their own experiences while seeking a closer relationship with the Lord.

For readers seeking encouragement drawn from a lifetime of experience, A Christian Life Well Lived offers adventure, faith and perspective worth carrying beyond the final page. Available now on Amazon.
