His duties in this capacity will include managing the budget for the entire hospital system, which has two acute care hospitals, a long-term skilled nursing facility and various outpatient clinics. He will also work with clinical and senior leaders to create budgets for the next fiscal year, help department leaders prepare their budgets for board approval and act as an internal financial consultant to help leaders understand how their operations affect the hospital's finances.
About Mr. Marks:
Mr. Marks brings a decade of experience in health care and finance to Sharp Healthcare. Before his current position, he was the director of financial planning and analysis and decision support at Palomar Health from 2023 to 2025 and the manager of decision support for the preceding two years. He also held several other roles at Palomar Health, including financial planning analyst III, financial planning analyst II and strategy and business development analyst. Earlier in his career, he worked as a clinical decision support analyst at Community Medical Centers and as a performance improvement intern.
Educationally, Mr. Marks earned a Master of Business Administration with a focus in health care management and finance from Northeastern University in 2020. Earlier in 2013, he obtained a Bachelor of Science in microbiology with concentrations in immunology, biomedical science and genetic engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Additionally, he has a Lean Six Sigma yellow belt, is certified by GoLeanSixSigma.com and is a Six Sigma Lean Professional (SSLP) with the Management and Strategy Institute.
Mr. Marks recognizes that the health care industry is currently undergoing rapid changes. Factors such as the lingering impact of COVID-19 on the workforce and the supply chain for medicines, along with pressure from insurers regarding reimbursements, mean that careful financial management has become more important than ever to keep services in his community running. He also understands that new federal laws are creating some uncertainty, making risk management an important part of his job.
A Notable Career in Health Care
In 2025, Mr. Marks received the Health Care Leadership Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), where he is currently a board member and co-treasurer for the San Diego chapter. He also serves as the treasurer of the board of directors for the San Diego Organization of Healthcare Leaders.
Mr. Marks' future ambitions include continuing to learn and grow, advancing his career at Sharp Healthcare and taking part in high-level decisions. He also wants to be involved in committees, serve on boards and complete the ACHE fellowship. He feels his dedication to learning and personal growth, along with his focused approach to his work, has helped him attain his professional success. He also credits mentors like Dr. Sears and Dr. Stovan from UCSB, as well as his current boss, Melissa Wallace, for their guidance. He believes that building strong relationships is important.
Outside of work, Mr. Marks has been a team captain and court monitor for the Elite Rehab Health & Fitness Marathon since 2012 and a habitat restoration volunteer for the Santa Barbara Coastal Fund. Furthermore, he is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and the Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society. In his free time, he enjoys walking his dog, going to the beach, hiking, practicing yoga and weightlifting. He also hopes to improve his golf game in the upcoming years.
