Mooncool, an electric mobility manufacturer, is highlighting folding electric tricycles as a practical transportation option for older adults as Canada's senior population continues to expand.

According to projections from Statistics Canada, nearly one in four Canadians will be aged 65 or older by 2030. The demographic shift is expected to place new pressure on housing, healthcare systems, community planning, and transportation infrastructure.
For many older adults living in suburban communities, smaller municipalities, and rural regions, maintaining mobility is closely tied to independence and quality of life. Traditional transportation options may not always meet the needs of seniors who no longer drive, have limited access to public transit, or face physical challenges associated with conventional cycling.
Mooncool said folding electric tricycles are gaining attention because they combine three-wheel stability, electric pedal assistance, step-through frame designs, cargo utility, and compact storage. These features may help older riders complete short-distance errands, visit community centres, access parks and libraries, and remain active in their neighbourhoods.
Unlike traditional electric tricycles that may require garage space or dedicated outdoor storage, folding electric trikes can be collapsed into a smaller footprint. This may make them more suitable for residents living in condominiums, apartments, smaller homes, or communities where secure outdoor storage is limited.
"The introduction of folding designs addresses one of the most persistent barriers to electric trike adoption among older adults: storage," said a researcher specializing in aging and urban mobility at Simon Fraser University's Faculty of Health Sciences. "Many seniors today live in smaller homes, condominiums, or residences without garages, and secure outdoor storage is not always available. Compact mobility solutions align more closely with those realities."
Electric tricycles are also being considered as an alternative for seniors who want mobility support without fully transitioning to conventional mobility scooters. Three-wheel configurations can offer added balance compared with standard bicycles, while step-through frames reduce the need for high leg lifts when mounting or dismounting. Pedal-assist systems may also help riders manage exertion and extend travel distances.
Advocates of electric tricycles say their use extends beyond recreation. Short neighbourhood trips, grocery runs, appointments, and community visits can become easier for older adults seeking alternatives to private vehicles or ride-hailing services.
The category is also benefiting from continued investments in cycling infrastructure across several Canadian cities, including Vancouver, Ottawa, and Toronto, where protected bike lanes have expanded opportunities for lower-speed transportation options.
Commercial interest in the segment reflects broader demographic and mobility trends. Market researchers at Grand View Research estimated that the global electric bicycle and tricycle industry exceeded US$49 billion in 2023, with adaptive and senior-focused mobility solutions identified among growing market segments.
Manufacturers are increasingly introducing features intended for older riders, including ergonomic seating, hydraulic braking systems, thumb throttles, step-through frame geometries, integrated cargo options, and more compact folding designs.
Among the products gaining visibility in Canadian retail channels is the Mooncool TK2 Folding Electric Trike. The model includes a step-through aluminum frame, dual rear-wheel configuration, integrated cargo space, and a folding mechanism designed to support easier storage and transport.
Mooncool said compact electric mobility devices are not a replacement for accessible public transit, age-friendly community planning, or healthcare transportation programs.
However, the company said folding electric trikes may serve as one practical option for older adults navigating communities historically designed around automobile ownership.
As Canada's population ages, Mooncool expects accessible and storage-friendly mobility products to play a growing role in helping older adults maintain everyday independence, complete local errands, and stay connected to their communities.
Product and Mobility Notice
Product specifications, availability, rider suitability, storage requirements, local riding rules, infrastructure access, and safety requirements may vary by market and model. Riders should review current product information, local regulations, helmet and safety requirements, and personal mobility needs before use. Electric trikes may not be suitable for all riders or all transportation environments.
