PRWeek Awards Ceremony Marks Return of In-Person Events

PRWeek will ring the Closing Bell at Nasdaq’s MarketSite in Times Square today, coinciding with the return of the annual PRWeek Awards, the “Oscars of the PR industry,” as an in-person event.

PR professionals from big brands and corporations and the agencies that support them will join the PRWeek and Haymarket Media teams at Nasdaq to celebrate the industry and return to live events.

On Wednesday evening, PRWeek returns to Cipriani Wall Street for its first gala celebration since 2019, after holding its high-profile annual awards virtually in 2020 and 2021.

The awards ceremony recognizes the PR and communications professionals who responded in an unprecedented manner to the challenges of recent global crises.

Steve Barrett, editorial director of PRWeek, will ring the Closing Bell to celebrate the occasion and mark the start of a return to the new normal.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate those stellar achievements of the industry at the first in-person PRWeek Awards ceremony for three years,” Barrett said.

PRWeek’s return to live events kicked off on March 10, 2022, when New York Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton joined PRWeek to donate a grab and go breakfast cart to the Newark School of Global Studies. The donation was part of a collaboration with nonprofit GENYOUth to combat food insecurity and increase student access to school meals.

“As part of National School Breakfast Week, we were delighted to continue PRWeek’s partnership with nonprofit GENYOUth to help address food insecurity among inner-city students such as those in New Jersey, a state where one in five kids live in poverty,” said Barrett.

Slayton and PRWeek’s Barrett were joined by Newark Board of Education Superintendent Roger Leon, other board of education officials, and officials from GENYOUth, New Jersey dairy farmer Graham Ackerly on behalf of American Dairy Association North East, American Dairy Association North East, and the United States Department of Agriculture.

"Purposeful communication and purposeful business is one of the biggest agenda points for the brands and businesses that PRWeek covers, and we'll be digging deep into these issues at our annual PRDecoded conference in Chicago on October 11-12,” said Barrett. “But, as well as covering purpose as an issue, it's important for PRWeek to walk the walk too - and we are delighted to support GENYOUth's excellent work in helping young people and combating food insecurity."

The grab and go breakfast cart, milk cooler and cooler bags were provided by funding from PRWeek through GENYOUth’s End Student Hunger Fund in partnership with American Dairy Association North East.

GENYOUth’s breakfast cart program has targeted food insecurity through the donation of over 500 meal carts in American public schools since 2017.

Research shows hunger negatively impacts children’s school performance, having long-term consequences that could affect their future prospects.

“Young people such as those I met in Newark have so much potential and so much to offer,” said Barrett. “I truly hope the creative industries engage with non-traditional talent pools like this that are on their doorsteps and that the breakfast carts can be one small step in the process of helping students from less affluent communities get the same opportunities as their more fortunate peers.”

PRWeek plans to donate another cart in Chicago in October, coinciding with PRWeek’s annual PRDecoded conference.
