Kicking off the festival on March 21, MOPOP will host a special opening reception featuring remarks from key dignitaries, including Consul General Shri Prakash Gupta, and MOPOP CEO Michele Y. Smith, with Linda Lowry, City of Seattle Arts Commissioner, serving as Master of Ceremony. The evening will also feature a Bollywood dance performance, followed by a screening of English Vinglish, the acclaimed film about self-discovery and empowerment.

“Indian cinema is one of the most vibrant and influential storytelling mediums in the world, shaping not only entertainment but also cultural identity and dialogue,” said Michele Y. Smith, CEO of MOPOP. “As a museum dedicated to pop culture’s power to connect and inspire, we are proud to host the Indian Film Festival and create a space where these stories can be shared with our diverse community.”

The festival continues over the weekend with screenings of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, a coming-of-age road trip film, and Raksha Bandhan, a heartfelt story about family and sacrifice. All screenings will take place at MOPOP’s Sound + Vision Theater, providing an immersive experience for audiences to engage with Indian cinema’s artistry and cultural significance.

“Seattle’s deep-rooted ties with the Indian community have fostered a cultural exchange that enriches the city’s arts and heritage,” said Consul General Shri Prakash Gupta. “This festival is a testament to the enduring impact of Indian film and its ability to bridge communities through shared stories and universal themes.”

The festival is part of MOPOP’s ongoing commitment to showcasing global perspectives in pop culture and highlighting underrepresented voices in the arts. “Film has the power to transcend borders and create connections,” said Linda Lowry, City of Seattle Arts Commissioner. “The Indian Film Festival is a unique opportunity to celebrate the creativity, history, and influence of Indian cinema while engaging Seattle audiences in meaningful cultural conversations.”

The Indian Film Festival at MOPOP is free for MOPOP members.
