REXBURG, Idaho - Poor sleep is often blamed on stress or a busy schedule. For some people, the real cause sits inside the mouth. Family First Dental in Rexburg is working to help local patients understand how a dentist can spot early warning signs of obstructive sleep apnea.
Dr. William Stout, the practice's lead dentist, brings an unusual background to this work. Before dental school, he trained in polysomnographic technology, the field behind overnight sleep studies. That training shapes how his team screens patients today.
Sleep apnea causes breathing to stop and start during sleep. Many people never get a diagnosis. Common signs include loud snoring, morning headaches, and daytime tiredness. A dentist can notice physical clues during a routine visit, such as worn teeth from grinding or a narrow airway.
"A lot of patients come in tired and have no idea their sleep is being interrupted at night. We can catch the early signs during a normal checkup and point them toward the right help," said Dr. William Stout.
Family First Dental does not replace a medical diagnosis. When signs point to a possible sleep problem, the team works with physicians and sleep specialists. For patients already diagnosed with mild to moderate sleep apnea, or those who cannot tolerate a CPAP machine, the practice can fit a custom oral appliance. The device holds the jaw in a position that helps keep the airway open.
The office also uses cone beam (CBCT) imaging to study the airway and jaw in three dimensions. Patients can see their own scans on a screen and ask questions about what the images show.
Dr. Stout earned his dental degree from Creighton University School of Dentistry and has 20 years of experience in the field. Family First Dental opened in October 2025 and serves families in Rexburg, Rigby, Sugar City, and St. Anthony.
