Although all plants benefit from fertilization, flowering plants require macronutrients in specific ratios for flower production. Phosphorus, or phosphate (P), is the nutrient that promotes blooming and fruit formation, and gardeners who wish to stimulate flowering are advised to choose fertilizers with a higher ratio of P compared to nitrogen (N) and potassium (K), says the GS Plant Foods team.
