Research Shows a ‘Rise of Socialism’ to a ‘Failing Democracy’ to ‘Rising Anger’ to New ‘Savings Penalty Tax’ on the Country’s Most Successful

-- “America is in trouble,” according to new voter research from Dr. Frank Luntz, well-known pollster and communications strategist.

This week, over 100 attendees listened to a private presentation given by Luntz entitled “Economic Opportunity & Wealth in America.” Luntz’s opening statement to attendees was: “This will scare you, because America, we are in trouble.”

The new research, conducted in late April, comes from a survey of 1,000 American voters. The range of topics ranged from the rise of socialism to a failing democracy to rising anger to the increased desire to create a “savings penalty tax” on the most successful in our country.

Additionally, the research shows 67% of Americans think America is going through the “worst of times” right now, and describe the country as “broken,” “bad,” and “corrupt.”

The survey also found 70% of Americans believe the economic system is “unfair,” upward economic mobility is “unattainable,” and 55% say that are “just keeping up” or “falling behind” with their personal finances.

The research was sponsored by Family Enterprise USA Action. Family Enterprise USA Action engages with legislators on Capitol Hill on behalf of family-owned businesses, family offices, and hardworking families. It is focused exclusively on the critical tax and economic policies that impact them.

One telling datapoint in the survey showed that more than a third (38%) of voters want to “see more socialism and less capitalism” in our economy, the highest percentage since 2009 when it was 23%.

“If you care about the future of America and it’s family-owned businesses, you want to pay attention to what this research says,” said Luntz. “The findings clearly point to a popular rise in favorable view of socialism, and more importantly voters feel the American Dream is now out of reach for most,” he said.“The cost of basics, like food and gas, are unaffordable and it’s all about affordability and cutting waste, fraud, and corruption in our government’s spending.”

When it came to “The American Dream,” the survey found 59% said that the American Dream was less attainable now than when they “were growing up.” The survey also found less than a third of American’s think “the country cares about” them.

When it comes to taxation, the survey found 37% said the “wealthy don’t pay their fair share,” while 31% said “our tax dollars are wasted by Washington politicians.”

There was a split when it came to tax solutions, with 54% saying they wanted to make “the wealthy” pay more taxes and 46% saying the middle class should “pay less in taxes.”

With the rise of many state and federal proposals to create a new “Wealth Tax,” Luntz’s research showed that most voters “don’t understand the term,” which he calls a “savings penalty tax.”

“When you tell voters a Wealth Tax is taxing both income and assets, support drops dramatically,” said Luntz. “If we don’t wake up and address these issues, we’re going to find the America we all know and love will no longer be recognizable in the near future,” he said. “We need to create a tax code that promotes a healthy economy, good jobs, and an affordable lifestyle. We have too many loopholes and too much government waste and fraud in our system.”

America’s family businesses are the largest private employers in the country, accounting for 83.3 million jobs in some 32 million family businesses across the country, according to research. These businesses contribute $7.7 trillion annually to U.S. gross domestic product.
