New Evaluation Reveals Shaun Tomson’s “Code Method” Dramatically Shifts How People Think About Life, Purpose, and Human Connection.

-- New evaluation findings tied to Shaun Tomson’s purpose-driven Code Method are drawing new attention following his recent appearance at the Western Positive Psychology Association Conference. Tomson’s conference appearance also formed part of his 20th anniversary book tour for The Surfer’s Code.
The evaluation was conducted by Zachary Swanson, an Applied Positive Psychology PhD Scholar at Claremont Graduate University. Swanson reviewed nearly 1,800 cleaned audience responses, including about 750 paired pre-post cases, collected before and after Code Method presentations.
The findings suggest participants moved away from words associated with stress, exhaustion, overwhelm, and confusion, and toward words more closely associated with purpose, clarity, love, intentionality, optimism, and connection.
Participants were asked how they were feeling about life before the presentation and what word they would take away afterward.
According to the evaluation, negative-oriented responses dropped from nearly 30 percent before the presentation to less than 1 percent afterward. Positive-oriented responses rose to 99.65 percent after the presentation. High-clarity responses, including language focused on purpose, intentionality, and direction, increased from 2.29 percent before the presentation to 21.32 percent afterward. Connection and relationship-oriented responses, including language emphasizing love, kindness, and empathy, increased from 1.88 percent to 14.90 percent.
The evaluation also found that participants appeared to shift from describing immediate emotional burdens and daily stressors toward more future-oriented reflections involving identity, meaning, purpose, hope, openness, and connection.
At the center of the program is The Code Method, a reflective exercise in which participants write and share a personal code beginning with the words “I will.” The process is designed to help individuals clarify values, strengthen self-awareness, and connect personal purpose with daily action. Shaun Tomson’s official speaker materials describe the method as a purpose-based framework used in talks and workshops focused on turning hope into action and commitment into daily practice.
Tomson, the 1977 World Surfing Champion and author of The Surfer’s Code, has delivered The Code Method to corporations, universities, schools, and leadership organizations around the world. His speaking site lists organizations including Google, Disney, Cisco, and General Motors among past audiences.
“People do not just want success anymore, they want meaning too,” Tomson said. “The Code Method helps people reconnect with purpose, commitment, and the best version of themselves. When individuals find purpose, teams become stronger, cultures become healthier, and organizations become more human.”
The timing of the findings is notable as many organizations continue to look for practical ways to address burnout, disengagement, workplace culture, and leadership development. While the evaluation points to encouraging early patterns, it remains preliminary and further long-term research is expected to help clarify how durable these shifts may be over time.
Tomson’s conference appearance added a research-focused dimension to his current national book tour marking 20 years since the publication of The Surfer’s Code. During the tour, he has been appearing at bookstores, community venues, and schools, extending the book’s message of purpose, resilience, and personal responsibility to new audiences.
Swanson said the early findings suggest The Code Method may help participants cultivate greater purpose, clarity, connection, and positivity in their lives.
