-- Odin House Dental Surgery, the Odin Road practice that has served the Innaloo community for close to three decades, is getting behind Dental Health Week 2026 (3–9 August), the Australian Dental Association's annual campaign, which this year turns its attention to the oral health of 18 to 25-year-olds through the “My Smile” initiative.
With ten dentists, two oral health therapists and a team that between them speaks a wide range of languages, Odin House Dental Surgery has long positioned itself as a practice for Perth's whole community, including the many international students and new arrivals who call Innaloo and the surrounding suburbs home. Dr Johannes Yap, principal dentist at Odin House Dental Surgery, says that makes this year's Dental Health Week theme especially relevant to the patients walking through the door.
“So many of the young adults we see are managing a lot for the first time — a new home, a new job or course, a budget they've never had to stick to before,” Dr Yap said. “Dental care is often one of the first things to be put off, not because people don't care about their teeth, but because they're not sure what it costs, where to start, or whether it's even urgent. Dental Health Week is a chance for us to say: come in for a check and clean appointment, we'll talk you through it, and it doesn't need to be daunting.”
The ADA notes that Gen Z is more likely to turn to the internet or social media influencers for health information than a qualified professional, which Dr Yap says can lead young patients to delay proper care or attempt treatments that aren't right for them. Odin House Dental Surgery's response has been to offer a free face-to-face Smile Chat consultation, so young patients can ask questions and understand their options before committing to any treatment.
The practice has also long made mouthguards a point of focus for Perth's sporting community, fabricating custom guards in a short turnaround time,— a service Dr Yap says is worth highlighting again this Dental Health Week given the ADA's warnings about the long-term cost of preventable sporting injuries to the teeth and jaw.
Beyond cosmetic and preventive care, Odin House Dental Surgery has built its reputation over 28 years on accessibility: the practice accepts a wide range of health funds including Medibank Private, Bupa and HBF (as preferred provider) as well as offers Afterpay and Zip payment plans. Odin House Dental Surgery has two waiting rooms which includes a children's play space and a private multipurpose room while waiting for or while recuperating after surgery, making it a practical choice for young families across Innaloo, Scarborough, Osborne Park, Woodlands, Karrinyup and the broader northern Perth suburbs.
Dr. Yap is encouraging young adults working or living in the Inaloo area to use Dental Health Week as the prompt to book a check-up, particularly those who haven't seen a dentist since finishing school. In conjunction with Dental Health Week, patients are invited to schedule a Check and Clean appointment to take advantage of the practice’s Smile Deals® Offers.
“Our advice this Dental Health Week is straightforward,” Dr Yap said. “If you're a young adult and it's been a while since your last check-up, or you're new to Perth and haven't found a dentist yet, this is a good week to make that first appointment. We'd much rather see you for a routine visit than a dental emergency.”
Odin House Dental Surgery is located at Suite 3/8 Odin Road, Innaloo WA 6018, and is open six days a week including evenings on Wednesday and Thursday. Appointments can be made by calling (08) 9468 7182.
