“BlackLine delivered strong profitability and cash flow in the third quarter while making significant progress transforming our business,” said Owen Ryan, CEO of BlackLine. “Our foundation is strong. Customers are moving to our platform, making larger and longer commitments, and the world’s largest companies continue to choose BlackLine.”

Revenue growth

A company’s long-term revenue performance can indicate its overall quality. Any business can post a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long haul. Over the last five years, BlackLine grew its revenue at a 13% annual rate. Though this growth is acceptable on an absolute basis, evaluating software companies requires more than just revenue growth, given their potential for significant earnings volatility. The bar for the sector is particularly high, reflecting the non-essential and hit-driven nature of the products and services offered. Additionally, the five-year compound annual growth rate starts around Covid, when revenue was depressed then rebounded.

BlackLine quarterly revenue

Long-term growth is the most important, but within software, a half-decade historical view may miss new innovations or demand cycles. BlackLine’s recent performance shows its demand has slowed as its annualized revenue growth of 8.1% over the last two years was below its five-year trend. Decelerating revenue growth in the sector warrants caution, as it could signal changing consumer tastes aided by low switching costs. BlackLine year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, BlackLine grew its revenue by 8.5% year on year, and its $193.4 million of revenue was in line with Wall Street’s consensus estimates. Company management is guiding for a 7% year-on-year increase in revenue next quarter.

Looking further ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 10.4% over the next 12 months, according to S&P. While this projection implies its newer products and services will spur better top-line performance, it is still below average for the sector.

Billings

Billings is a non-GAAP metric that is often called “cash revenue” because it shows how much money the company has collected from customers in a certain period. This is different from revenue, which must be recognized in pieces over the length of a contract.

BlackLine’s billings came in at $170.7 million in Q3, and over the last four quarters, growth averaged an underwhelming 7.5% year on year. This performance mirrored its total revenue growth and suggests that increasing competition is making it harder to acquire and retain customers. BlackLine billings

Customer retention

An advantage of the software-as-a-service business model, and one reason these companies trade at high valuation multiples, is that customers typically spend more on a company’s products and services over time.

BlackLine’s net revenue retention rate, a key performance metric measuring how much money existing customers from a year ago are spending today, was 103% in Q3. This means BlackLine would’ve grown its revenue by 3% even if it didn’t win any new customers over the last 12 months.

BlackLine net revenue retention rate

BlackLine has an adequate net retention rate, indicating that it generally keeps customers but lags behind the best software-as-a-service businesses, which routinely post net retention rates of 120%+.

Key takeaways from BlackLine’s Q3 results

Strong customer growth and adjusted operating income above Wall Street’s consensus estimates were positives for BlackLine this quarter. But billings fell short of consensus and revenue guidance for next quarter missed expectations, making this a quarter that could have been better. Shares fell 2.7% to $32.75 immediately after the results.

BlackLine’s latest earnings report disappointed. One quarter doesn’t define a company’s quality, so it’s worth examining whether the stock is a buy at the current price. The latest quarter is only one piece of the longer-term business quality picture. Quality, when combined with valuation, can help determine if the stock is a buy.
