In the African country of Mali, thousands of dogs are killed each week for human consumption. Not only are they killed for consumption, but many are tortured to death in the mistaken belief that the more an animal suffers before it dies, the tastier the meat.
Donkeys are being slaughtered for their skins, to near Extinction, for the insatiable Chinese traditional medicine market. Many of them are skinned while still alive.
If that's not horrible enough, the ritual torture of cows includes having the poor creatures driven into pits of fire while people throw stones at them.
Some Malians don't fare much better. Reports are numerous of people being burned alive for refusing to convert to radical Islam. The country is desperately poor and jobs are scarce, so many young people exploit the trafficking of animals, and the vicious cycle never ends.
With only limited resources at its disposal, the animal welfare organization, Network For Animals, has tried to assist a group called ARAF Plateau Dogon, the only charitable organization in the entire country focused on helping these poor people and animals. They realize that the key to reducing the animal cruelty lies in its projects to help traffickers convert to agricultural activities. But Mali is a vast country and these two groups have limited resources. Very very few Americans and Britons have any idea this is happening. We need to bring these atrocities to light.
