CHANTILLY, VA / ACCESS Newswire / October 14, 2026 / Marquis Who's Who is proud to interview and honor Dr. Mercedes Agudo, MD, LFAPA, DFAACAP, ScM, for her distinguished contributions to psychiatry, child and adolescent mental health and lifelong patient care. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors including position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence within a field are taken into account during the selection process. Dr. Agudo's recognition reflects more than three decades of clinical practice, education, research and service to patients across diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.

A board-certified psychiatrist with expertise spanning the full life cycle, Dr. Agudo has treated children, adolescents, adults and seniors throughout her career. Her most recent clinical work includes service as a full-time inpatient psychiatrist at Warren State Hospital for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She previously practiced as an outpatient psychiatrist with WellSpan Health Philhaven and Intercessory Counseling & Wellness PLLC and spent several years caring for patients at the Phoenix Indian Medical Center, where she worked extensively with Native American populations.
During her Marquis Who's Who interview, Dr. Agudo noted that she developed an early interest in medicine and ultimately felt called to psychiatry. She earned an accelerated Bachelor of Science in biology and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila. After coming to the United States, she completed a residency in psychiatry at Howard University Hospital and a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the Medical College of Virginia. She later became a diplomate of the Philippine Board of Psychiatry and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
She states in her interview that her professional career began in private practice in Iligan City, Philippines, where she treated children, adolescents and adults. She also joined the faculty of Mindanao State University College of Medicine before returning to the United States. Her subsequent positions have included work with Philhaven Behavioral Health Services, St. Luke's Behavioral Health Center, Arizona State Hospital, Arizona's Children Association and Phoenix Indian Medical Center. From 2011 to 2015, she additionally served as an adjunct faculty member at Arizona State University's College of Nursing as a preceptor of Nurse Practitioner students.
Dr. Agudo continues to prioritize education as both a physician and lifelong learner. In 2024, she earned a Master of Science in health care leadership from Brown University's School of Professional Studies and is pursuing a Master of Science in criminal justice through Franciscan University of Steubenville. Her recent academic work reflects an expanding interest in the intersection of psychiatry, health care systems, public policy and legal issues.
Her scholarly contributions include the 2026 article "The Relevance of Striking a Balance Between Research Sociocentric Social Milieu and Egocentric Individual Competence," published in the International Journal of Forensic Science & Research, and a 2025 article addressing "Psychiatry: The Relevance of Improving Access to Healthcare for Acutely Mentally Ill and Those with Longstanding Mental Illness." Earlier in her career, she co-authored "Panic Disorder Diagnosed as Schizophrenia: A Transcultural Issue," which she presented through the National Medical Association's Chester M. Pierce resident research symposium.
Dr. Agudo has received numerous professional distinctions, including recognition as Psychiatry Resident of the Year, Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and, in 2025, Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Marquis Who's Who has also honored her with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.
In her latest Marquis Who's Who interview, Dr. Agudo emphasized the importance of continuing education as psychiatry becomes increasingly interconnected with other areas of medicine. She says, "I have to remind the psychiatrist to continue advancing their education. Whether formal or experience-wise, you cannot keep up with the fast change in the landscape of health care." She noted that psychiatrists are being called upon to collaborate more closely with specialties such as obstetrics, surgery and oncology while also navigating changes in health care administration, technology, legal system and increasingly complex patient needs.
At the same time, she remarked in her interview that psychiatry must preserve the human and artistic dimensions of medicine. While advances in psychotropic medications, psychotherapy, globalization and digital technology continue to reshape the field, she maintains that quality psychiatric care cannot be rushed. For her, healing remains highly individualized, requiring clinicians to balance scientific advancement with presence, compassion and careful attention to each patient.
Faith has remained central to Dr. Agudo's professional journey. She attributes her success first to her Christian faith and to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, colleagues, students, patients, and the institutions that supported her throughout her career. Her advice to other professionals is rooted in "perseverance, constancy, faith, hope and love."
"Dr. Mercedes Agudo exemplifies the caliber of compassionate physician and accomplished mental health professional Marquis Who's Who is proud to chronicle," the editorial team stated. "Her ability to combine clinical expertise, lifelong education, cultural awareness and deeply held values reflects a career devoted to serving patients at every stage of life." Through its interview and recognition of Dr. Agudo, Marquis Who's Who celebrates a psychiatrist whose work continues to advance mental health care while preserving the human connection at the center of medicine.
