SAN CARLOS, CA / ACCESS Newswire / October 8, 2026 / Marquis Who's Who is proud to interview and honor Anthony B. Chen, PhD, for his distinguished contributions to biotechnology, biopharmaceutical product development, analytical science and clinical product quality. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility and prominence in a field are considered during the selection process. In Dr. Chen's case, that recognition reflects a career defined by scientific curiosity, collaboration, mentorship and a commitment to developing medicines for patients with serious illnesses.

Dr. Chen retired from Genentech Inc. in 2025 after more than 40 years with the biotechnology company. He states in his Marquis Who's Who interview that, during the final chapters of his career, he served as a QC principal scientist and senior quality assurance specialist, maintaining end-to-end quality oversight for clinical products across multiple development phases. He ensured reliable clinical supplies for patients and represented product quality during due diligence visits involving potential acquisitions.

Dr. Chen joined Genentech in 1984 and initially worked in immunoassay development. He later served as director of biological chemistry before transitioning into quality control as a scientist, defining QC control systems for late-stage products. During his interview, Dr. Chen shared that one of his most significant achievements was introducing capillary electrophoresis (CE) methods for routine quality-control testing. These techniques provided faster, less labor-intensive alternatives to traditional gel-based methods. Within three years, Genentech included CE methods in the Biologics License Application (BLA) for Rituxan. Dr. Chen also stated that, along with a colleague, Dr. Wassim Nashabeh, he played a foundational role in establishing CE Pharm, a scientific forum dedicated to the application of CE within biotechnology and pharmaceutical development. The program has continued for more than 25 years and includes participation from industry experts and the FDA. In 2008, Drs. Chen and Nashabeh co-received the CE Pharm Annual Award for sustained and significant contributions to applying the technology in biopharmaceutical analysis.

Dr. Chen played an important role in the biological characterization of the BLA submission of Rituxan, the first monoclonal antibody (mAb) approved by the FDA for the treatment of cancer. This was a groundbreaking achievement as it provided the FDA with a protocol they could use for BLA submissions of mAbs. He helped resolve complex analytical challenges that arose during the submission process and supported the establishment of the control system needed for consistent manufacturing and product quality.

Throughout his career, Dr. Chen participated in work connected to the approval of many of Genentech products. While in QC, he contributed significantly to Rituxan, Herceptin and Kadcyla, three approved anti-cancer molecules. He approaches these accomplishments with humility, emphasizing that biotechnology advances result from teams of scientists, engineers, quality professionals, regulatory specialists and manufacturing experts. In his interview, he expressed admiration for colleagues whose discoveries and scientific leadership helped bring transformative treatments to patients.

Dr. Chen earned a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and biochemistry and a Master of Science in immunochemistry and allergy from McGill University. He subsequently obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed postdoctoral research in hematology at Downstate Medical Center and in virology at Vanderbilt University.

His scholarly contributions include more than 40 publications, many regulatory filing sections and presentations delivered at professional conferences. He co-edited "CE in Biotechnology: Practical Applications for Protein and Peptide Analyses" and authored works addressing methods used in biopharmaceutical drug development.

In his interview, Dr. Chen attributes his success to hard work, a passion for science and the support of his wife. As the first member of his immediate family to attend college, he also credits the educators and mentors who encouraged him throughout his academic and professional development. In turn, he made mentorship a priority, supporting colleagues and identifying promising professionals capable of advancing the field.

Marquis Who's Who previously presented Dr. Chen with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award earlier this year, recognizing his leadership, professional accomplishments and lasting contributions to biotechnology.

"Dr. Anthony Chen exemplifies the caliber of scientist and biotechnology leader Marquis Who's Who is proud to chronicle," the editorial team stated. "His contributions to analytical science, product quality, the development of important cancer therapies and his work on Pulmozyme for cystic fibrosis, among other products, reflect a career defined by innovation, collaboration and service to patients." Through its recognition of Dr. Chen, Marquis Who's Who celebrates a scientist whose legacy continues through the medicines, methods and professionals he helped advance.
