The Chief Executive Officers of Gen Re, Selective Insurance Group, and Tokio Marine HCC to lead Board of Trustees, helping The Institutes continue to empower people and organizations to create a more resilient world.

Strong leadership shapes the direction and lasting impact of any organization, and those who lead at the highest level set the course for everything that follows. With that principle in mind, The Institutes are proud to announce that Kara Raiguel, President & Chief Executive Officer of Gen Re has been appointed as the Chair of the organization’s Board of Trustees. Joining her as Vice Chairs are John J. Marchioni, CPCU, Chairman, President and CEO of Selective Insurance Group, Inc. and Susan Rivera, FCAS, CEO of Tokio Marine HCC.

“We are grateful to have Kara, John, and Susan as our Chair and Vice Chairs of The Institutes’ Board,” said Peter L. Miller, CPCU, CEO of The Institutes. “Each leads highly respected organizations in risk management and insurance, and the fact that executives of their caliber choose to share their time with The Institutes speaks to a deep commitment to this field. Their strategic guidance will help shape where The Institutes go next and strengthen how we educate, elevate, and connect those interested in risk management and insurance.”

Raiguel joined Gen Re in 2016 after spending 16 years in Berkshire Hathaway’s Reinsurance Division, where she prospected reinsurance and insurance opportunities and priced loss portfolio transfers and acquisitions. During her tenure, she was responsible for Guard Insurance Group, the Division’s India reinsurance portfolio, and Berkshire Hathaway’s financial guaranty insurer, BHAC. Raiguel also established a California Workers’ Compensation portfolio for National Liability & Fire Insurance Company.

“Reinsurers sit close to the world's most complex risks and we see how quickly they're evolving. Making sound decisions amid that volatility requires deep expertise and The Institutes play an essential role in preparing the professionals and leaders our profession depends on,” Raiguel said. “I’m honored to serve as Chair of the Board of Trustees and look forward to helping advance that mission.”

Marchioni brings nearly three decades of experience at Selective to his role as Vice Chair of The Institutes Board of Trustees. He joined Selective in 1998 and rose through senior positions in government affairs and field operations before being named President and Chief Operating Officer in 2013. He became President and CEO in February 2020 and assumed his current role as Chairman, President and CEO in May 2022.

“As our industry navigates a workforce transition and the demands on risk management and insurance professionals continue to evolve, The Institutes provide trusted education, research, and collaboration that help prepare the next generation of leaders,” said Marchioni. “I'm honored to serve as Vice Chair and look forward to helping advance the organization’s mission and ensuring it continues to meet the needs of our profession and those we serve.”

Rivera has served as the CEO of Tokio Marine HCC since September 2018 and has been a member of its Board of Directors since June 2018. She previously served as the company’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Her earlier roles include president and CEO of V3 Insurance Partners and president of QBE Specialty, where she also served as chief actuary of QBE's Americas division.

“Success in specialty insurance is built on technical excellence and exceptional talent,” Rivera said. “The Institutes have long been an essential partner in developing both, and I'm honored to serve as Vice Chair as we continue investing in the future of the risk management and insurance profession.”

As these leaders begin their terms, The Institutes also recognize the dedicated service of outgoing Chair W. Robert Berkley Jr., President and CEO of W. R. Berkley Corporation, and outgoing Vice Chair John C. (Jack) Roche, President and CEO of The Hanover Insurance Group.

“We are deeply grateful to Rob and Jack for their outstanding leadership and service to The Institutes,” said Miller. “Their guidance, perspective, and steadfast commitment have helped strengthen our organization and position us for the future. On behalf of the Board and the entire enterprise, I thank them for the lasting impact they have made.”
