The Johnson Group Continues A Family Legacy Of Exceptional Service And Values-Based Relationships

As one of the most prolific commercial cleaning companies in the Carolinas, The Johnson Group has a client roster that includes household names like Bank of America Stadium and numerous local YMCAs. Its work extends to athletic, aviation, education, medical, and government sectors—and cleaning over 10 million square feet of customer space per night.

But despite its success, or maybe because of it, they never forget its roots.

“Our father’s legacy is what drives us,” says Katie Cutler, CFO, who co-leads the company with sister Emily McGrath, CEO. “He ran this company with hard work and integrity; that’s why we’re still successful today.”

Their father, Gene Johnson, founded the company in 1985, and instilled Christian values of integrity, transparency, and hard work not only in his daughters, but throughout The Johnson Group. It’s a culture that McGrath and Cutler take pride in upholding today.

“We focus on personalized attention for all our customers,” says McGrath. “We treat all accounts equally, regardless of their size. It’s our thorough, efficient, and high-quality cleaning results that truly set us apart.”

Regular communication, responsive feedback, and quick rectification of problems have built strong and loyal customer relationships, many of which have endured for over a decade. In fact, 90% of customers are referrals from other satisfied customers.

Empowering Employees

The Johnson Group staffs 75 full-time employees and 300-400 part-time employees. Each is valued as a unique individual who plays a critical role on the collective team.

“A company is only as good as its employees,” says McGrath. “We make it a point to promote from within and motivate people to fulfill their potential—even, and especially, when they don’t think they have managerial potential. It is a joy to watch our employees exceed even their own expectations.”

Cutler gives the example of an employee who started with the company 20 years ago and didn’t have a driver’s license. She personally took this employee to the DMV to set her on a path of upward mobility. Today, that same employee is a custodial manager at Bank of America Stadium—and drives herself to work every day.

“Our father always had an open-door policy. We want to be approachable,” says Cutler. “He taught us that the person who turned on the vacuum at night is the person who puts food on our table, and we need to respect them.”

McGrath concludes, “We are very proud of our positive, inclusive work environment that empowers our employees to take pride in their work and help our customers’ spaces thrive.”
