FedByDefault launches A Mental Firewall, a program teaching children and families three questions no platform will ever teach them to ask.

EAST AURORA, N.Y. - May 15, 2026 - PRLog -- Every online safety curriculum currently taught in schools addresses the same dangers: strangers, bullies, and human manipulation online. Almost none address the most pervasive digital danger children face today: the algorithm itself.

A new program called A Mental Firewall, developed by independent author Sam Harker under the FedByDefault initiative, aims to close that gap with three questions simple enough for a ten year old and transferable for life.

The Gap Nobody Is Addressing
Traditional online safety education teaches children to be suspicious of unknown humans approaching them online. What it does not teach is that the environment itself has an agenda.

The algorithm is not a stranger in a chatroom. It is a system built by some of the most sophisticated engineers on earth, optimised for one purpose: to capture and hold attention for as long as possible. It has no malice, no intent. It simply optimises, continuously and invisibly, for the behaviour most likely to keep a child engaged, without ever being asked what that optimisation costs the child inside it.

Online safety education has no category for this. There is no curriculum that teaches children to ask who built the environment they are inside, who benefits from their attention, or what emotion the content they are seeing was designed to produce.

"Liquor stores won't promote AA meetings," says Sam Harker. "Fast food chains won't promote Weight Watchers. The algorithm won't promote digital consciousness. So it's up to us."

The Three Questions
A Mental Firewall is built around three questions that take three seconds to ask and change the relationship between a child and the feed from one where the algorithm is in charge to one where the child is.

Who made this?
Everything in the feed was created with an outcome in mind. This question breaks the illusion of neutrality.

Who benefits from my attention?
The child is not the customer. Their attention is the product. This question names the transaction.

What do they want me to feel and why?
Outrage keeps you scrolling. Envy drives consumption. Validation keeps you coming back. This question identifies the emotional engineering underneath the content.

The purpose of the three questions is to create a pause between stimulus and response. Psychologists call this metacognition, the ability to notice your own thoughts and emotions instead of automatically reacting to them.

The questions are introduced in a 90-minute workshop then woven through a five day personal audit participants complete at home. By the final day participants write the questions in their own words. At that point the questions are no longer borrowed. They belong to the child.

What the Algorithm Said
The program grew from an unusual origin. Sam Harker typed a question into an AI system with no prior context. What came back was a complete interview in which the algorithm spoke for itself, describing in precise and unsettling detail how it works, what it does with children, and what it does with the most vulnerable hours of an adult's day. 'I did not interrupt their development. I became the environment in which it happened. The children have no ghost. When they sit with nothing they do not feel free. They feel wrong.'
L'Stream, Interview with the Attention Vampire

Nothing in the interview had to be invented. The resulting book forms the foundation of the FedByDefault program and is available now at samharker.gumroad.com

For Schools and Faith Communities
A Mental Firewall is designed to work in any setting where trusted adults gather with children or families. The complete program includes a children's audit for ages 10 to 14, an adult audit for parents, and a facilitator guide containing everything a teacher, youth leader, or pastor needs to run the 90-minute workshop independently without an outside presenter.

A Community License at $250 allows schools and faith organisations to distribute all materials to their community and retain the revenue generated. The interview is included for the facilitator and leadership team. The free Cynical Literacy guide is available to share with any community at no cost. at http://Www.fedbydefault.org

With summer approaching and unstructured screen time about to increase significantly, the timing is deliberate. A child who enters summer with the three questions already in place is a measurably different child from one who doesn't.

About FedByDefault
FedByDefault is a digital literacy initiative developed by Sam Harker, a pseudonymous independent author. The name reflects three simultaneous realities: that we are fed content by default without conscious choice; that we are fed upon, with our attention as the resource being consumed; and that we ourselves operate on default settings installed gradually by years of algorithmic exposure.

The FedByDefault program is not anti-technology. It is pro-consciousness. The internet is not going away. The goal is to live with it without living for it.
