What Happened?

Shares of global financial services giant Citigroup (NYSE: C) fell 4.3% in the afternoon session after the company reported third-quarter earnings that beat headline expectations but revealed sequential declines across investment banking, trading, and firm-wide profitability. According to the company’s earnings release, third-quarter net income was $5.2 billion, or $2.85 a share, on revenue of $23.85 billion, above the $2.65 consensus. From the second quarter, revenue fell 4%, net income fell 10%, and return on tangible common equity slipped to 11.5% from 13.0%. Investment banking revenue fell 13% from the second quarter to $1.35 billion. Equity underwriting fees fell 19% and debt underwriting fees fell 18% from that quarter. Markets revenue fell 13% to $6.11 billion. On the earnings call, chief financial officer Gonzalo Luchetti said fourth-quarter Markets revenue is likely to fall by about as much as it did last year, a 20% drop, or a bit more, given how strong the year has been. The provision for credit losses was $2.6 billion, including a $369 million net reserve build tied to the macroeconomic outlook and portfolio growth.

The shares closed the day at $124.55, down 5.3% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Citigroup’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 6 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 8 months ago when the stock dropped 5.8% on the news that hotter-than-expected inflation data and rising concerns over credit risk rattled investors. January's Producer Price Index (PPI), a measure of wholesale inflation, rose 0.5% against expectations of 0.3%, with the core component jumping 0.8%. This report fuels the narrative of "sticky inflation," suggesting the Federal Reserve may have limited room to cut interest rates. Compounding these worries are growing anxieties in the credit markets. According to a Bank of America strategist, problem loans are an increasing concern that could pressure lenders. Investors are reassessing credit risk, particularly in private-credit and leveraged-loan markets, weighing on the valuations of banks sensitive to the economic cycle.

Citigroup is up 5.1% since the beginning of the year, but at $124.70 per share, it is still trading 14.4% below its 52-week high of $145.67 from June 2026. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Citigroup’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,775.
