What happened?

Shares of financial software provider SS&C Technologies (NASDAQ: SSNC) fell 6.8% in the morning session after the company reported third-quarter 2026 financial results and issued fourth-quarter revenue guidance that fell short of consensus expectations.

According to a company press release, SS&C reported third-quarter GAAP revenue of $1.690.0 billion, up 7.8% year on year, and adjusted diluted earnings per share of $1.78, representing a 14.8% increase. The company also reported adjusted consolidated EBITDA of $674.8 million alongside adjusted organic revenue growth of 5.2%.

While third-quarter adjusted earnings topped consensus estimates by $0.01 and revenue met forecasts, fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $1.70 billion to $1.74 billion fell below consensus expectations of $1.748 billion. According to the report, the company projected fourth-quarter earnings per share of $1.88 to $1.94 against a consensus estimate of $1.90. The downward move reflected investor concern over future top-line momentum, as the muted revenue forecast overshadowed the third-quarter earnings beat.

What is the market telling us

SS&C’s shares are not very volatile and have only had 3 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The biggest move we wrote about over the last year was 3 months ago when the stock gained 10.5% on the news that the company reported strong second-quarter results that topped Wall Street expectations and raised its full-year guidance. For the second quarter of 2026, SS&C's revenue grew 10.3% year on year to $1.70 billion, and its adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.76, both beating analyst estimates. Bolstered by the performance, management lifted its full-year 2026 guidance for both revenue and adjusted EPS. However, the outlook was somewhat mixed, as the company's revenue forecast for the upcoming third quarter came in slightly below projections.

SS&C is down 2.5% since the beginning of the year, but at $83.58 per share, it is still trading close to its 52-week high of $89.62 from December 2025. Despite the year-to-date decline, investors who bought $1,000 worth of SS&C’s shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,114.
