  • Adjusted EPS -$0.57 vs S&P analysts’ consensus estimates of $0.23 (significant miss)

Robert W. Eifler, President and Chief Executive Officer of Noble, stated, "The third quarter, which featured a 5% sequential decrease in Adjusted EBITDA, marked the successful resumption of operations for both of our rigs in Brazil, but was also impacted by several other rigs across the fleet transitioning between contracts. On the commercial front, we have recently secured approximately $560 million in new contract awards, including a number of key programs that support a strengthening fleet utilization profile as we move through 2027."

Revenue growth

Cyclical sectors like energy often flatter weaker operators during favorable price environments, but a longer-term lens separates those from businesses that can consistently perform across market cycles. Noble Corporation’s revenue grew at a compound annual rate of 28.9% over the last five years. Its growth beat the average energy upstream and integrated energy company and shows its offerings resonate with customers.

Noble Corporation quarterly revenue

Energy cycles can be long enough that a single five-year period can still reflect one price environment, which is why an additional, decade-long view can help capture through-cycle performance. Noble Corporation’s annualized revenue growth of 1.4% over the last ten years is below its five-year trend, but the results were still respectable.

This quarter, Noble Corporation’s revenue fell by 8.7% year on year to $728.8 million but beat Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 2.1%.

Adjusted EBITDA margin

Adjusted EBITDA margin captures the operating profitability of an energy producer by removing accounting effects related to depletion and capitalized drilling costs. It reveals how much cash the asset base generates before capital structure and reinvestment requirements shape reported earnings.

Noble Corporation was profitable over the last five years but held back by its large cost base. Its average EBITDA margin of 31.6% was weak for an upstream and integrated energy business.

On the positive side, Noble Corporation’s EBITDA margin rose by 9.9 percentage points over the last year, as its revenue growth provided operating leverage.

Noble Corporation trailing 12-month EBITDA margin

This quarter, Noble Corporation generated an EBITDA margin of 27.6%, down 4.3 percentage points year on year. This contraction shows it was less efficient because its expenses increased relative to its revenue. This adjusted EBITDA fell short of Wall Street’s consensus estimates.

Cash generation

Adjusted EBITDA shows how profitable a company’s existing “rock” is before financing and reinvestment, while free cash flow shows how much value remains after paying to replace those wells. Because production declines over time, strong EBITDA can coexist with weak FCF if drilling is expensive or declines are steep. FCF therefore captures both operating efficiency and the cost of sustaining production.

Noble Corporation has shown mediocre cash profitability relative to peers over the last five years, giving the company fewer opportunities to return capital to shareholders. Its free cash flow margin averaged 6.5%, below expectations for an upstream and integrated energy business.

The level of free cash flow is important, but its durability across cycles is just as critical. Consistent margins are far more valuable than volatile swings driven by commodity prices.

Noble Corporation’s ratio of quarterly free cash flow volatility to WTI crude price volatility over the past five years was 14.7 (lower is better), indicating that its cash generation is far more sensitive to commodity-price swings than most peers. This elevated volatility limits its access to capital in downturns and makes it unlikely to act as a consolidator when weaker competitors come under pressure.

This stability analysis compares Noble Corporation’s free cash flow with WTI prices rather than using revenue or EBITDA. What ultimately matters is not how much revenue or profit a company earns when prices are high but how much cash it can generate when prices are low. Free cash flow is the superior metric because it includes everything from hedging effectiveness to growth and maintenance capex to management behavior during good times and bad.

Noble Corporation trailing 12-month free cash flow margin

Noble Corporation used $47.51 million of cash in Q3, equivalent to a negative 6.5% margin. The company’s cash flow turned negative after being positive in the same quarter last year, but one quarter should not carry too much weight because investment needs can be seasonal, leading to temporary swings. Long-term trends carry greater meaning.

Key takeaways from Noble Corporation’s Q3 results

Noble Corporation’s revenue beat analysts’ consensus estimates, but EBITDA and EPS missed Wall Street’s expectations, making Q3 a softer quarter overall. Shares tumbled 6.1% to $45.00 immediately after the results.

Noble Corporation underperformed this quarter, but that alone doesn’t determine whether the stock is worth buying. The latest quarter is only one part of assessing longer-term business quality. Quality, combined with valuation, can help determine whether the stock is a buy. For more on Noble Corporation, read our full research report here (it’s free).
