Revenue growth

A company’s long-term performance is an indicator of its overall quality. Any business can put up a good quarter or two, but the best consistently grow over the long haul.

With $2.20 billion in revenue over the past 12 months, Alight is a mid-sized business services company, which sometimes brings disadvantages compared to larger competitors benefiting from better economies of scale.

Alight struggled to generate demand over the last five years. Its revenue dropped by 4.5% annually.

Alight quarterly revenue

Long-term growth matters most, but within business services, a half-decade historical view may miss recent innovations or disruptive industry trends. Alight’s annualized revenue declines of 3.6% over the last two years align with its five-year trend, suggesting its demand has consistently shrunk.

Alight year-on-year revenue growth

This quarter, Alight’s revenue fell by 6.2% year on year to $500 million but beat Wall Street’s consensus estimates by 5.5%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to decline by 10.4% over the next 12 months, according to S&P, a deceleration versus the last two years. This uninspiring outlook indicates its products and services will face demand headwinds.

Adjusted operating margin

Alight has been an efficient company over the last five years. It was one of the more profitable businesses in the business services sector, with an average adjusted operating margin of 16.1%.

Looking at the trend in its profitability, Alight’s adjusted operating margin decreased by 4.3 percentage points over the last five years. Even though its historical margin was healthy, shareholders will want to see Alight become more profitable in the future.

Alight trailing 12-month operating margin (non-GAAP)

In Q3, Alight generated an adjusted operating margin of negative 10.6%, down 23 percentage points year on year. This contraction shows it was less efficient because its expenses increased relative to its revenue.

Earnings per share

Revenue trends explain a company’s historical growth, but the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) points to the profitability of that growth – for example, a company could inflate its revenue through excessive spending on advertising and promotions.

Alight’s full-year EPS flipped from negative to positive over the last five years. This is a positive development and marks a critical stage for the company.

Alight trailing 12-month EPS (non-GAAP)

As with revenue, we analyze EPS over a shorter period to see if we are missing a change in the business.

Alight’s EPS declined by more than its revenue over the last two years, dropping 28.9%. This tells us the company struggled to adjust to shrinking demand.

We can take a deeper look into Alight’s earnings to better understand the drivers of its performance. Alight’s adjusted operating margin has declined over the last two years. This was the most relevant factor (aside from the revenue impact) behind its lower earnings; interest expenses and taxes can also affect EPS but don’t tell us as much about a company’s fundamentals.

In Q3, Alight reported adjusted EPS of $0.66, down from $2.40 in the same quarter last year. Despite falling year on year, EPS came in well above analysts’ consensus estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects Alight’s full-year EPS to shrink by 24.2% from $6.37 to $4.83, according to S&P.

Key takeaways from Alight’s Q3 results

Alight’s revenue beat Wall Street’s consensus estimates by a wide margin, and EPS also topped analysts’ consensus expectations. Those beats made for a strong quarter, with shares soaring 15.2% to $11.71 immediately after the results.

Alight reported solid earnings, but one quarter doesn’t necessarily make the stock a buy. The latest quarter matters, but not nearly as much as longer-term fundamentals and valuation when deciding whether to invest. Read our full research report here (it’s free).
