Company Overview

One of the companies that forms a duopoly in the commercial aircraft market, Boeing (NYSE: BA) develops, manufactures, and services commercial airplanes, defense products, and space systems.

Revenue Growth

A company’s long-term sales performance is one signal of its overall quality. Even a bad business can shine for one or two quarters, but a top-tier one grows for years. Luckily, Boeing’s sales grew at a decent 8.8% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years. Its growth was slightly above the average industrials company and shows its offerings resonate with customers.

Boeing Quarterly Revenue

We at StockStory place the most emphasis on long-term growth, but within industrials, a half-decade historical view may miss cycles, industry trends, or a company capitalizing on catalysts such as a new contract win or a successful product line. Boeing’s annualized revenue growth of 13% over the last two years is above its five-year trend, suggesting its demand recently accelerated. Boeing Year-On-Year Revenue Growth

We can better understand the company’s revenue dynamics by analyzing its number of units sold, which reached 171 in the latest quarter. Over the last two years, Boeing’s units sold averaged 60.4% year-on-year growth. Because this number is better than its revenue growth, we can see the company’s average selling price decreased. Boeing Volume Sold

This quarter, Boeing reported year-on-year revenue growth of 8%, and its $24.56 billion of revenue exceeded Wall Street’s estimates by 1.7%.

Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to grow 11.7% over the next 12 months, similar to its two-year rate. We still think its growth trajectory is attractive given its scale and indicates the market sees success for its products and services.

Operating Margin

Although Boeing broke even this quarter from an operational perspective, it’s generally struggled over a longer time period. Its expensive cost structure has contributed to an average operating margin of negative 3.7% over the last five years. Unprofitable industrials companies require extra attention because they could get caught swimming naked when the tide goes out.

On the plus side, Boeing’s operating margin rose by 11.8 percentage points over the last five years, as its sales growth gave it operating leverage. Still, it will take much more for the company to reach long-term profitability.

Boeing Trailing 12-Month Operating Margin (GAAP)

This quarter, Boeing’s breakeven margin was 0.6%, up 1.4 percentage points year on year. This increase was a welcome development and shows it was more efficient.

Earnings Per Share

Revenue trends explain a company’s historical growth, but the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) points to the profitability of that growth — for example, a company could inflate its sales through excessive spending on advertising and promotions.

Boeing’s full-year EPS flipped from negative to positive over the last five years. This is a good sign and shows it’s at an inflection point.

Boeing Trailing 12-Month EPS (Non-GAAP)

Like with revenue, we analyze EPS over a shorter period to see if we are missing a change in the business.

For Boeing, its two-year annual EPS growth of 54.5% was higher than its five-year trend. We love it when earnings growth accelerates, especially when it accelerates off an already high base.

In Q2, Boeing reported adjusted EPS of $0.76, up from negative $1.24 in the same quarter last year. This print easily cleared analysts’ estimates, and shareholders should be content with the results. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects Boeing’s full-year EPS to shrink by 53.7% from $3.01 to $1.39.

Key Takeaways from Boeing’s Q2 Results

It was good to see Boeing beat analysts’ EPS expectations this quarter. We were also happy its revenue outperformed Wall Street’s estimates. Zooming out, we think this was a solid print. The stock traded up 1.1% to $213.88 immediately following the results.

Boeing put up rock-solid earnings, but one quarter doesn’t necessarily make the stock a buy. Let’s see if this is a good investment. What happened in the latest quarter matters, but not as much as longer-term business quality and valuation, when deciding whether to invest in this stock. We cover that in our actionable full research report which you can read here (it’s free).
