What Happened?

Shares of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration company Carrier Global (NYSE: CARR) fell 4.5% in the morning session after the company reported second-quarter results that, despite beating expectations, revealed a decline in year-over-year profitability. Carrier's report showed a mixed performance.

On one hand, the company surpassed Wall Street's estimates for both revenue and earnings per share for the second quarter and raised its sales and profit forecasts for the full year. Revenue grew 3.9% compared to the prior year. However, investors appeared to focus on declining profits. The company's adjusted earnings per share fell to $0.86 from $0.92 in the same quarter last year, and its operating margin decreased by 1.8 percentage points to 13%. This drop in profitability, despite higher sales, likely prompted the negative market reaction.

The shares were trading at $66.19, down 4.5% from the previous close.

What Is The Market Telling Us

Carrier Global’s shares are somewhat volatile and have had 10 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today’s move indicates the market considers this news meaningful but not something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 18 days ago when the stock gained 3.6% on the news that Wolfe Research raised its price target to $80 from $76 and maintained an 'Outperform' rating on the shares. The analyst noted several positive trends, including potential upside in the Americas Residential and Light Commercial divisions and a faster-than-expected recovery in the European residential market.

The firm also anticipated another quarter of strong orders for Commercial HVAC systems in the Americas. The positive outlook was supported by broader trends, as record heat in Europe and extreme weather events globally are accelerating the adoption of air conditioning, increasing overall demand for Carrier's products.

Carrier Global is up 23.7% since the beginning of the year, but at $66.19 per share, it remains 18.4% below its 52-week high of $81.09, reached in July 2025. A $1,000 investment made five years ago would now be worth approximately $1,284.
