WEST PALM BEACH, FL, Oct. 23, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- GOA Therapeutics Corporation ("GOA" or the "Company"), a biotechnology company developing first-in-class candidates for acute alcohol intoxication and poisoning, today announced new preclinical findings for GOA26 presented at ANESTHESIOLOGY® 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, which took place October 16-20, 2026 in San Diego.

In a preclinical porcine model of severe alcohol intoxication, GOA26 rapidly reduced circulating alcohol exposure by 61% at 20 minutes post-administration compared with alcohol-only controls, while reducing acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism. GOA26-treated animals also demonstrated greater physiological stability across metabolic, hematological, and liver-associated biomarkers. Together, these findings support GOA26’s potential to improve airway safety, facilitate more predictable anesthetic induction, and reduce aspiration and ventilatory complications during anesthesia and emergency surgery.

Severe alcohol intoxication can make anesthesia and emergency surgery more dangerous, increasing the risk of serious, potentially life-threatening complications. When surgery or an airway intervention is urgent, clinicians may not be able to wait for alcohol to clear naturally. Today, treatment remains primarily supportive, with no FDA-approved medicine to rapidly accelerate alcohol elimination.

“We are working to create an entirely new category of emergency treatment,” said Andrew Altschuler, Co-Founder and CEO of GOA Therapeutics. “For patients facing life-threatening alcohol intoxication or requiring potentially life-saving surgery, the consequences can be devastating. Our mission is to put a first-in-class treatment in the hands of physicians, transforming what is possible in emergency departments and operating rooms. These findings bring us another step closer to that goal.”

GOA26 is an investigational intravenous combination drug candidate designed to accelerate alcohol clearance and scavenge acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism.

Key Preclinical Findings

In a porcine model of severe alcohol intoxication, GOA26 was administered intravenously after intoxication was established. Investigators evaluated ethanol and acetaldehyde exposure alongside blood and biochemical indicators of systemic recovery. Findings included:

  • Active acetaldehyde removal mechanism. GOA26 accelerated alcohol clearance while simultaneously targeting acetaldehyde, a toxic byproduct of alcohol metabolism, for removal. Measured acetaldehyde levels declined over the observation period.
  • More stable biochemical recovery. Treated animals showed glucose stabilization, an attenuated rise in urea, preservation of phosphorus and no progressive deterioration in measured liver-associated markers (ALT, ALP and GGT).
  • More consistent blood-cell responses. Red and white blood cell parameters showed reduced variability and more consistent recovery trajectories, particularly following severe alcohol exposure.
  • Sustained activity with repeat dosing. Ethanol-clearing activity was preserved following repeated administration over 10–14 days, without evidence of tachyphylaxis or cumulative systemic destabilization in the reported assessments.

These preclinical findings provide a scientific foundation for further evaluating GOA26’s potential to improve patient care during anesthesia and emergency surgery.

GOA26 is advancing towards human clinical studies with an IND submission planned for Q4 2026.
