DC3: Viral Menace – an indie studio’s attempt at creating a game that combines the best of two beloved genres.
-- DC3: Viral Menace is a twin-stick shooter and tower defense hybrid PC game. The kick? It takes place inside the human body.
Upon learning that her estranged daughter, Xernia Lace’s life hangs in the balance from an incurable viral infection, Dr. Vidya Vichaar, a.k.a Dr. Capsule, has no choice but to attempt the impossible – cure her from the inside.
Now, with the assistance of Xernia’s close friend Professor Aisle Kyoor, and his arsenal of unique weapons, clever upgrades, and powerful turrets, Dr. Capsule must fight hordes of viruses and collect enough Antigen to save Patient Zero.
Captain her marvelous, shrinking-ship the Caper-5000 and experience the wonders of the human body. Explore the airy wind tunnels of the lungs, dash through the churning, raging acids of the stomach, speed down the arterial highways leading to the thunderous beating heart, and experience the lights of star-like neurons of the brain. Inspired by titles like Honey I Shrunk the Kids and The Magic School Bus, the game has been steadily developing over the last three years.
“With DC3: Viral Menace, our goal was to combine the best of two distinct genres – Twin-Stick Shooter and Tower Defense – as well as address their shortcomings,” explains Lead Game Designer, Nikhil Sonalkar.
The game challenges players to maintain an attack rhythm and efficiently manage resources to maximize its Twin-Stick offense. Meanwhile, the Tower Defense structures offer dynamic defensive and supportive aid – sequestering all of the offense in the players’ hands.
The story is told through two perspectives, the physiological exploration of the human body and the psychological impact that an infection can have on a patient. Throughout the game, we learn about Dr. Vichaar’s strained relationship with her daughter, what caused the divide between them, and how the decision to distance herself from her family weighs down on her.
“When we began our exploration of the story, we were drawn to themes surrounding the loss of one’s hero,” says Lead Narrative Designer, Nihar Sonalkar, “and since ‘heroes’ and comic books go hand-in-hand, our aesthetic of playing through a comic book felt like a natural choice.”
DC3: Viral Menace takes the player through a narrative journey expressed as frames of a comic book. The art style draws inspiration from classics such as Hergé’s The Adventures of Tintin, and the ubiquitously known world of Studio Ghibli. With meticulously hand-crafted biological systems, the cellular world of DC3: Viral Menace aims to find a balance between science and fiction.
“Our team at S-Qubed Entertainment Inc., cares about every pixel we create,” adds Nikhil, “and we need your help to make DC3: Viral Menace a truly memorable game.”
DC3: Viral Menace has launched its Kickstarter campaign and is available until April 24th, 7:00 AM (ET).
