Set in the early 1990s and inspired by real events, the film was shot on 16mm film in multiple locations across the Czech Republic with its emotional crescendo culminating in New York City. As the Film Fest Report notes “[Broken Voices] is a visual poetry; it maintains the nuances of restraint, the atmosphere, of haunting undercurrents throughout the film.” The international co-production captures both the psychological depth of its characters and the sociopolitical atmosphere of sexual abuse and cover up.
