No Team Required as AI-Powered One-Person Companies Rise

With the widespread adoption of generative AI, one-person companies are growing rapidly. With AI assisting in copywriting, design, customer service, and data organisation, a single individual can now complete tasks that previously required multiple team members.

BOSTON, MA (MERXWIRE) – Can one person really start a company? In the past, this sounded difficult. Today, however, more people are beginning to do exactly that. With AI support, tasks that once required several people can now be handled by a single individual working with AI tools. This model is often referred to as the “AI one-person company.”

According to a Stanford University report, 78% of organisations were using AI in 2024, a significant increase from the previous year. Among them, 71% reported applying generative AI to at least one business function, such as marketing, customer service, or content creation. More importantly, many organisations reported noticeable productivity gains after adopting AI. For one-person companies, this means time-consuming tasks—such as writing content, responding to messages, and organising data—can now be completed more efficiently.

In fact, one-person businesses have long existed, but AI is making them easier to operate. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that in 2023, there were 30.4 million nonemployer businesses in the United States, generating approximately $1.8 trillion in revenue. Many of these businesses are essentially individual studios or solo operations. With AI, these small businesses effectively gain a “virtual assistant” that can handle various routine tasks.

Currently, AI-powered one-person companies are most common in three sectors. The first is content and creative work, including writing, social media content, design, and short-form video production. The second is consulting and professional services, such as marketing consulting, presentation design, and course development. The third is digital products and e-commerce, including e-books, templates, online courses, and small branded products. These fields require limited equipment and are well-suited for solo operations.

However, running a one-person company is not without challenges. AI can assist with execution, but human judgment is still required to define direction, identify markets, design services, and communicate with customers. In other words, AI is a tool—not the decision-maker. Success still depends on whether the service meets real demand and whether the business can be sustained over time.

Overall, the “one person + AI” model is reshaping entrepreneurship. In the past, starting a business often meant hiring employees first. Now, it may begin with selecting the right AI tools. As AI adoption continues to expand, more micro-businesses—ranging from content creation and consulting to small e-commerce brands—are likely to be operated by individuals. The AI-powered one-person company is gradually emerging as a new entrepreneurial option for the next generation.
